Review of Non-Dairy Yogurts

By Gwende1yn

There are many types of soy yogurt on the market today, and they all taste fairly different. There are two main things to look out for when choosing one: sugar and carageenan (or other sources of MSG). A lot of non-dairy yogurts contain quite a lot of sugar per serving, which doesn’t make it very healthy. Personally, I like to go for Wildwood Plain, unsweetened or Nancy’s Plain and then I mix in my own sweeteners or flavorings (fruit, vanilla, maple syrup, orange oil, etc.).

Soy Yogurt

  • WildWood is one of the best, in my opinion. It’s thick, creamy, and smooth. Their flavored versions were pretty good, last time I had them. Their plain, unsweetened kind is very tart, but good with a little maple syrup and Stevia. It’s what I prefer to use.

  • Nancy’s soy yogurt is also decent, and they make a plain version without too much sugar and without any carageenan or MSG ingredients. The downside to it is that it’s kind of runny.

  • Silk's yogurt is also good. It's thick, creamy, smooth, and well flavored. It’s also pretty easy to find. It does have a fair amount of sugar, though.

  • Stonyfield Farm seems to be the easiest to find in your typical grocery store...or maybe it's just Giant Eagle. It's ok, but seems to often contain traces of dairy, and it's more watery and less creamy and doesn't taste quite as good as the others. Also, be careful because they make lots of dairy yogurts, and the label styles are very similar.
